Cyclone Idai Appeal: help older people survive the aftermath

Help us reach older women and men who have lost everything. Please, donate whatever you can today.

I would like to give:

  • could provide clean water for three families for ten days
  • could keep 7 people warm and dry with a blanket
  • could feed a family of six rice, beans and cooking oil for a month
  • Anything you can spare will help older survivors

How we're helping

We are responding in all three countries - Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Right now, we are reaching the most vulnerable and isolated people over 60 with:

  • Food
  • Clean water

Older people are particularly vulnerable during crises like this. With whole cities flooded and destroyed, time is of the essence to reach people with life-saving aid.

Next steps:

  • Shelter materials for older people living alone
  • Support to get medicines and other essentials
  • Solar lamps to help older people move around in the dark

Older people need specialist age-friendly aid, which Age International and partners are expert at providing. But we cannot do it without your help.

What's the situation on the ground?

Older people have told us these are the worst floods they've ever seen in their lives.

Beira - Mozambique’s fourth largest city with over 500,000 inhabitants – is totally without electricity and communication. 90% of the city has been destoryed.

The Government of Malawi have declared a ‘state of disaster’. The scale of the crisis continues to unfold and deepen as heavy rains and floods continue. There is a desperate need for food, clean water, and shelter.

Vulnerable older people risk being left behind and forgotten. Our partners in Malawi say: "We need all the help we can get to reach the survivors, and help them rebuild their lives."

Please, give whatever you can today.

Age International is raising money together with the DEC for the Cyclone Idai Appeal. The DEC is a consortium of 14 aid agencies working together in times of disasters and emergencies. Any income not spent after twelve months of the appeal launch may be allocated to another emergency situation that requires our support.
