Will you help older people living through crisis and disaster around the world this winter?
The world is becoming less predictable. Climate-related disasters and conflict are affecting more people than ever before. When war or disaster strikes, older people are among the hardest hit, yet they are the least likely to receive help.
In Ukraine, many older people struggle with ill-health, loss of vision and hearing, or disability, which makes it difficult to escape the fighting. Despite the danger, many older people have remained at home, some because they physically can’t leave; others because they cannot bear to abandon the place where they grew up, or their beloved pets. They feel trapped – hungry, afraid, and often alone.
Older people in Ukraine speak of deep loneliness and anxiety. Recently, Liudmyla, 66, told us: “We are resilient despite all trials, but at the same time very fragile and vulnerable. We stand till the end. But every year it gets harder to hold on.”
