Will you help older people and their families in East Africa?

Extreme, widespread and persistent drought has left over 28 million people in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Kenya and Somalia in dire need of food and water.

The region is experiencing its worst drought in over forty years. Crops are failing, livestock are dying in their millions, water is becoming scarcer every day. With rapidly escalating food prices, the situation is getting worse

Millions of older people and their families are waking up, and going to bed, hungry every day and need emergency aid right now.

Older people are particularly at risk

We know, working with older people in East Africa right now, as well as in emergency situations around the world, that older people will be amongst those worst hit.

  • In Ethiopia, 9 out of 10 older people do not have enough food to eat; many have so little that they can only eat one meal per day
  • In South Sudan 4 in 10 older people are unable to access safe drinking water close to home, putting them at risk from severe dehydration as well as illness from drinking unsafe water
  • As their adult children migrate in desperate search of food and water, we are receiving reports of older people being left behind to look after grandchildren, without support

How your donation could help older people

Your donation could help with aid and support that is tailored to meet the specific needs of older people and those with disabilities.

In Ethiopia your donation could help older people with an emergency cash grant so that they can buy the food they need for themselves and their families. It could also help us deliver clean water to the communities who need it most urgently.

In South Sudan, your donation could help provide food baskets containing essential staples such as cereals and oil to older people and their families as well as water, seeds and livestock to help build future resilience against the drought.

A small donation can make such a big difference, please donate today.

Age International is raising money for our East Africa Hunger Appeal, to support our work in East Africa for older people, people with disabilities and their families. Any income not spent after twelve months past the end of the appeal may be allocated to another emergency situation that requires our support.
