Milka is staying fit and active in Kenya
“I see a big difference in my life because if not for the help I got, I would still be at home and I would be blind forever.”
“I see a big difference in my life because if not for the help I got, I would still be at home and I would be blind forever.”
“My name is Milka, I’m 85 years old and I live in Kenya. I attend my local community group known as an Older People’s Association (OPA). The OPA brings older people like me together, helping us to feel less lonely and isolated. I have also improved my health thanks to the healthy eating advice and regular exercise classes that take place.”
OPAs as a sanctuary
The OPA is run by a local organisation called KARIKA and is funded by generous supporters like you. The centre offers older people like Milka, a safe space where they can receive both practical and psychological support.
“I enjoy spending time here, sharing a meal together.
I help prepare meals at the centre, tidy the kitchen and chop vegetables. It is a refuge for me because at home I sometimes experience abuse from one of my sons.
We learn about our rights and how to demand them and even participate in decision-making to secure change for ourselves and our community.
I share time, skills and experience with others in the community and I can take part in classes and discussions as well as meaningful activities to feel empowered.
I was able to access free medical care and receive essential medication via my OPA. An eye check-up revealed I needed a cataract operation, which I was able to get free of charge. I am delighted with my much-improved vision plus the sunglasses I received to help with the glare.”

“I also found it difficult to walk because of an old spinal injury. Since receiving physiotherapy, I can walk much more easily, and much longer distances.”
Older people gathered at the local OPA
“We gather here and talk, sharing ideas.”
Globally, there are more than one million Older Person’s Associations, all supporting older people like Milka to navigate the challenges and celebrate the joys of ageing together. Thanks to the support of the Grandparents United community and other donors, more older people like Milka, can actively participate in their communities, through their local OPA.
