Sign up to Grandparents United and help older people like Inayado

Life in the Thar Desert in north-west India is tough. When the ponds and wells dried up in the dry season, getting water every day meant a gruelling trip over many hours to find the nearest source. For older people, like Inayado, this left little time or energy for anything else.

Using donations from Age International supporters, our local partners in the area installed a rainwater harvesting tank, which is owned and maintained by the older women in the community, including Inayado.

The tank has transformed the whole village. Not only does the community now have access to clean water nearby, it’s also given Inayado and the older women in the village a sense of pride and respect. Inayado told us "Today is better than yesterday. I’m still here, still doing my part. I’ve worked hard and it shows it’s possible to live with dignity in old age, even in the desert."
